Journal series · two volumes

The pattern you keep repeating.

Ascend is a 60-day journal in two volumes. Volume One goes down into the pattern and names it. Volume Two goes up into the gap between the pull and the choice and works it, day after day. One hundred and twenty days end to end — and the same honest score running through both.

The arc

Sixty days down. Sixty days up.

Most journals give you one shape and repeat it until you stop. Ascend gives you two, in order. You cannot widen a gap you have not found yet, and finding it takes about sixty days of writing it down.

  1. Days 1–60 · Volume One

    The Descent

Name what you are avoiding while the day is still ahead of you, then look honestly at where you looked away. Nothing is fixed in Volume One. It is only seen.

    Morning
    What is the mountain today?
    Evening
    What did the day reveal?
  2. Days 61–120 · Volume Two

    The Summit

Put a pause where the pull used to go straight through to the action, then review where the pause held and where it collapsed. Weekly check-ins, a midpoint at day thirty, a summit review at day sixty.

Volume One

Ascend Volume One paperback cover: the word ASCEND in letterspaced brass serif capitals on a deep forest-green field, above a brass line-drawn mountain with a dotted trail climbing to the summit, the line ‘A 60-Day Journal · Volume One: The Descent’, a small fir-tree glyph, and the Quiet Days Press imprint at the foot.

The Descent

A 60-Day Journal for the Pattern You Keep Repeating. Written for the person on their third attempt at the same change. The morning page asks what you are avoiding, resisting or repeating, and what that behaviour is protecting you from. The evening page asks where you looked away, and what it cost.

Volume Two

Ascend Volume Two paperback cover: the word ASCEND in letterspaced cream serif capitals over a painted mountain peak lit by a low sun, with the line ‘A 60-Day Journal · Volume Two: The Summit’ beneath and the Quiet Days Press imprint at the foot.

The Summit

A 60-Day Journal for the Gap Between the Pull and the Choice. The gap is the millisecond between the impulse and the action. Volume One taught you to see it; Volume Two is sixty days of putting something into it. It reads alone, but it reads best as the second half of the arc.

  • 60 morning pages and 60 evening pages, undated
  • Six Base Camp check-ins — one at the end of each week
  • The Midpoint at day thirty, and the Summit review at day sixty
  • Two interlude essays on staying at altitude
  • The Sabotage Score continued, and averaged across the sixty

The one measurement

The Sabotage Score.

One number, every evening, in both volumes: the gap between what you meant to do and what you actually did. It is not a grade and there is nothing to protect. Written down for a hundred and twenty days, it becomes the only honest picture of a pattern you have.

Did what I said Nowhere near it

Volume Two adds the shape as well as the number: seven boxes at each weekly check-in, an average at day thirty, and an average across all sixty at the summit — with three tick boxes for the only question that matters. Rising, flat, or falling.

Why a number at all
Because “I did all right today” is unfalsifiable and a seven is not. The score exists to stop the evening page becoming a negotiation.
If you miss days
You pick up where you left off. Page 12 of Volume One says it outright: do not start the journal over. Finishing a volume is itself an interruption of the pattern.
What it is not
Not a streak, not a habit tracker, not a score you improve for its own sake. There is no target number printed anywhere in either volume.
Where it goes
Field V on the evening page in Volume One, field VIII in Volume Two, and then into the weekly trend, the midpoint, and the sixty-day average.

Inside the volumes

Morning · Volume One Day 01 · what is the mountain today?
Evening · Volume One The same day, walked back
Morning · Volume Two Day 01 · where is the gap today?
Evening · Volume Two Where the gap stayed open

Who it is for

Four readers, two volumes.

  • 01 The person on their third attempt at the same change. Not short of information or motivation. Short of a place to write down what happens just before they stop.
  • 02 Anyone who keeps almost finishing. Volume One is dedicated to them in four words. The pattern is usually not laziness — it is the last ten per cent.
  • 03 Readers of Atomic Habits and The Mountain Is You. You have the framing. This is the paper it gets practised on, for a hundred and twenty days.
  • 04 Anyone who wants a finish line. Sixty days is short enough to complete and long enough to change something. Then there is a second sixty, if you want it.

Free · printable · two sides

The Ascend Framework Card.

One card carries the whole series, one volume to a side. The front is The Descent: today’s mountain, the hidden need, one micro-shift, a future-self check-in, and the score. Turn it over and it becomes The Summit: today’s pull, the gap, one micro-action, a highest-self check-in, and the same score.

It is free, it is not a sample of either book, and it works on its own beside a notebook you already own. Print it once and you have both practices on one page.

One card, both sides, then a short series of notes on working the descent and the climb. No selling in the first email, no daily mail, unsubscribe in one click.

  • Front · The Descent
  • Back · The Summit

The card is delivered from this page so the notes that follow match the series. Taking it does not sign you up for the other two cards.
